I have thick curly wavy hair how would it look if i lightly thinned it?

i have med. dark brown hair very thick curly and wavy hair , it is very hard to mange in the morning for school . i would like to thin my hair but am scared to ruin all my curls . people tell me to get layers first to see how it would be and i did but it is still very thick . should i lightly thin it out ?
